In 1931 Napier was struck by a massive earthquake destroying the heart of the city, tragically taking 256 lives. The city was rebuilt in the style of the 20th century – Art Deco. The variety of these 1920 -1940 styled homes and commercial buildings, incorporating our cultural Maori motifs, is celebrated as an annual event in February attracting thousands of tourists. In 2007 the city was nominated as a World Heritage Site.
The Art Deco Capital of the world is situated on the shores of the South Pacific Ocean in the sunny Hawkes Bay, enjoying some of the highest sunshine hours in NZ. It is surrounded by over 70 beautiful vineyards producing some of New Zealand’s top wines, boasting over 400 Gold Medals in domestic wine making since 2001. Just ask Aaron how enjoyable it is to cycle around the vineyards and sample of few of these award winners!
The region is also New Zealand’s largest producers of apples, pears and stone fruit which are primarily exported via its own seaport. Also exported through the Port of Napier are vast amounts of sheep’s wool, frozen meat, wood pulp and timber.
There are many beautiful places to marvel in the Hawkes Bay, whether by bus, bike, feet or by air. Boutique shops, lattes and fine dining are all on offer in the city’s centre. A thriving nightlife sees local bands demonstrate their talents in many of the bars and restaurants.
In summary, Napier is an awesome place to be if you are searching for fabulous weather, fine food and wine, adventure and/or history.
